London Eye celebrates 5th birthday today

08.03.05

Visitors to the London Eye will be treated to a champagne flight today, to toast the attraction's fifth birthday.

Since opening 5 years ago, the 135m high structure has attracted up to 18m people and won more than 40 awards for tourism and architecture.

The London Eye was originally only granted planning permission for 5 years, and so would have closed today, but in 2003 it was given long term planning permission for at least 24 years.

A London Eye spokesman said the event 'marks the beginning of a new phase for the London Eye which will grace London's skyline for years to come'.
