Tropical trees are to be planted in London's Royal Parks, as native species cannot cope with the rising temperatures in Britain.
Experts say that mature native species should be able to survive higher temperatures for several decades, but current rates of premature tree death will rise if the temperatures continue to increase.
Beech, Poplar, Willow and English Oak are being killed by the dryer soil and warmer temperatures. In their place Spanish Chestnut, Turkish hazel and Mediterranean Olive trees are being considered by experts.
The Parks agency is also having to change many of its traditional bedding plants, as they require large amounts of water.
All eight parks are having a unified tree strategy drawn up and are considering adding trees more often seen in the Mediterranean to the Royal Parks.
