An exhibition of photographs capturing the life of Nigerians living in London opens today at the South London Gallery (until May).
Photographer Toyin Sokefun, from Lagos in Nigeria, spent 3 months snapping everyday life for Nigerians living in Peckham and Camberwell. The area is home to the biggest Nigerian community in the UK. She said it was 'wonderful to discover a Lagos in London'.
Ms Sokefun has took pictures of churches, restaurants and bars as part of the Depth of Field project. Six Nigerian photographers took part in the project and Ms Sokefun was the one photographer from the group chosen and assisted by the Arts Council to travel to London and take pictures of Nigerians living in the UK.
The other 5 photographers have taken pictures of Lagos which will also go on display at the Peckham Road gallery. A project spokeswoman for the gallery said that the exhibition was a 'London-wide celebration of contemporary and past African cultures'.
